Missions & Ministries

United Methodists organize our missions and ministries in three categories

Works of Piety are those things that help us to deepen our loving relationship with God such as prayer, worship, Bible study, disciplined daily devotional, participating in the Holy Communion, fasting, contemplation and meditation, and the like. It is attending to the vertical dimension of the Cross of Jesus Christ. Most of our Works of Piety are listed in the “Worship and Bible Study” page of our website.

Works of Mercy are expressions of our love for our neighbors, especially those who are neglected by the society and even by the church historically. St. Paul’s fulfills the Works of Mercy by reaching out to the community and meeting their needs. Many, if not all, of the ministries listed in this page of Missions and Ministries fall under the Works of Mercy. It attends to the horizontal dimension of the Cross of Jesus Christ.

Works of Justice is an extension of the Works of Mercy, not just asking how we could better help and care for the poor and the homeless, but also simultaneously asking why there are so many poor and the homeless in the richest and most powerful country in the world. Here, we seek to advocate and witness for systemic reform and social transformation. Be it organizing for March for Our Lives (overcoming the gun violence) or actively advocating on the legislative changes in the area of human and civil rights for immigrants, LGBTQ+ siblings, and working toward equality and reparative equity for our Black and People of Color sisters and brothers, St. Paul’s is right there doing what we can as a church and in partnership with the community and activist groups.

All these missions and ministries are our way of fulfilling the most important commandment in the Bible: Love the Lord our God with all our hearts, minds, souls and strength, and love our neighbors as ourselves.

GMIC
WARMING STATION

Who We Are. In 2008, when a homeless man died in Middletown because of the cold, the Greater Middletown Interfaith Council started its community Warming Station. For 12 seasons St. Paul’s United Methodist Church hosted the Warming Station, until Covid-19 required moving it to a new, more spacious location. St. Paul’s members remain an integral part of the management of this vital service to our community. The Warming Station is managed by a manager, staff members and community volunteers who work each night during the season from 8pm-8am, serving some of our community’s vulnerable members. Volunteers also bring a hot meal for our 30 guests each night.

How We Serve. The Warming Station provides a warm space, hot meal, coffee, and a safe place to sleep seven nights a week for those who would otherwise be trying to survive on the streets of our city during the coldest months. We’re able to house 30 men & women over the age of 18. Overnight volunteers sleep in a separate room at the Warming Station. Check in starts at 9pm, with lights out at 10 PM. At 6AM it’s wake-up time, and all guests must leave by 7am. Each morning, staff and volunteers clean and sanitize the Warming Station to prepare it for the next night. We hold multiple Volunteer Training for members of the community who wish to help & support the Warming Station. Supplies are donated by community members and purchased with money raised by the Greater Middletown Interfaith Council fundraisers.

St. Paul’s Inter-Faith Food Pantry

Who We Are. Our Mission started close to 50 years ago by the people of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Our primary service is food distribution, but handing a neighbor a food package is just the beginning. We pride ourselves in providing a compassionate environment while working with you on the unexpected transitions of life.

How We Serve. We serve our neighbors in greater Middletown area. We provide food packages that represent 10 – 15 meals for each person in the household. Our standard distribution days are Tuesday and Thursday mornings BY APPOINTMENT. To keep everyone safe during the Covid crisis, we provide curbside service and must strictly abide by appointment times. For information, call our direct line (845) 343-4425. We provide other services such as personal hygiene items, baby supplies, fuel, medications and facilitate furniture donations, when products or funds are available. Our compassionate Mission Director has decades of experience with human services and is a good person to speak with about life’s overwhelming and unexpected transitions.

Wednesday Dinner Community

Who We Are.  The primary focus of the Wednesday Dinner Community is to develop a diverse community with food being the opportunity to come together. We are a warm and welcoming community and the dinner is open to all who like to eat and enjoy a sense of community with great conversation.

How We Serve. St. Paul’s UMC has been serving our free Wednesday Dinner Community for almost 2 years. When we started we were serving an average of 30-40 people per month. Since starting, we are now serving over 100 meals a month. Join us on the 4th Wednesday of every month from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Salud Para Todos

Who we are. There is a need in our community for access to free and accurate health education, in addition to what is provided by physicians and health professionals during office visits.  It is vital to provide this type of information in an understandable way and in a person’s primary language. To provide this service, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church has partnered with Touro College of Medicine to present Salud para Todos (Health for All).

How we serve. The students of Touro College of Medicine conduct presentations in both Spanish and English on relevant topics such as Covid-19, Flu Prevention and Vaccination, Mental Health and Meditation and Nutrition and Diabetes.  These presentations are currently held via Zoom one evening a month. Afterwards, they are posted on St. Paul’s UMC MIddletown NY Facebook page.  To find out more about upcoming topics and how to join the presentation, contact the church office at 845-343-6911 or stpaulsumcmiddletown@gmail.com.

OUR MISSION

We strive to share God’s love by creating safe places where all are accepted and welcomed, connecting the needs of people to the presence of God, and transforming the world through Christ.
